Loceye (acquired by Neurons Inc)

Measuring and predicting human attention with computer vision and machine learning

Loceye was founded with the mission to enable designers and digital marketers to test new concepts faster, design with confidence and maximize impact, through the help of computer vision technology.

In 2022 the company was acquired by Neurons Inc, a consumer neuroscience company based in Denmark. Neurons is a leader in applied neuroscience and behaviour prediction technology trusted by some of the largest companies in the world.

The Loceye platform

The company developed a cloud-based eye-tracking platform to help measure Visual Engagement both easily and accurately. Loceye allows anyone to a) upload their digital design files (e.g. web page screenshots or designs), b) recruit a remote test panel of real people based on requested demographics and c) receive a completed eye-tracking study in less than a day. The remote testers recruited for each study view the content through Loceye’s platform while their webcam is recording the movement of their eyes to build an visual attention model. Eye-tracking results from across the entire test panel are combined into unified heatmaps and Area of Interest analyses.

This allows design and marketing professionals to test new concepts easily and optimize digital assets like website content, images, emails and ad creatives to achieve the highest visual and emotional impact.

The VisualEyes platform

After realizing that many designers need to iterate even faster and have little time for user testing, the Loceye team went on to develop a second product: an AI Design Assistant which generates visual attention insights without depending on camera input and eye-tracking measurements. Instead, the system simulates eye-tracking studies and preference tests using machine learning, with a 93% accurate predictive technology.

The AI Design Assistant is called Visualeyes. It was launched late 2019 and had over 35,000 registered users when acquired by Neurons Inc, including some of the world’s largest brands such as Microsoft, IBM, Spotify, Airbnb and Mailchimp.

Dimitrios Kourtesis, co-founder of Ideas Forward, was an advisor and angel investor in Loceye. He worked with the team in the initial phase of product strategy and helped the company raise its first round of equity funding (€300K led by Velocity.Partners Venture Capital fund).
